Partitions

Before format a hard disk with a file system such as FAT or NTFS, we must divide a drive into logical parts is called partitioning. Windows NT supports two types of partitions. Primary and Extended both types of partitions can coexist on the same hard disk

A disk can have a primary partition and extended partition. A primary can occupy all of the space on a disk, or any portion of it, any primary partition on the first hard disk in the computer can be designed as the active partitions. The active partition is significant because when the computer boots. It attempts to load the operating system from the active primary partition on the first hard disk in the computer.

There can be only extended partition on a disk. An extended partition can not mark active, and it can not be for the system partition of a computer. Actually it’s the additional partition of disk which can further divided into logical drives. Logical partitions are the sub parts under extended partition. Logical drives can be formatted with either FAT or NTFS.
